C1 - FAZZA 3 TAKE POLE AHEAD OF WELMAX AND FAZZA 1

Saturday, 27 March, RIO DE JANEIRO (Brazil): The opening Edox Pole Position of the season, saw a dominant performance from Fazza 3’s Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi, posting the fastest time to take pole position for this afternoon’s Race 1 of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The battle for second and third places on the grid was fought out between Welmax and Fazza 1, with the Norwegians edging out their Emirati rivals by two seconds.

With a time of 2mins 33.34secs, the formidable pairing of Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi finished a comfortable three seconds ahead of the chasing pack and the reigning champions will start as favourites for this afternoon’s race. "Pole position is important here. If you start on pole you have the best chance of being first at the first buoy," said Al Zafeen, "And from there you can control the race."

Welmax’s Jorn Tandberg and Kolbjorn Selmer’s time of 2mins 37.04secs was good enough for second place on the grid and further proof that the Norwegians are determined not to allow the defending champions to have it all their own way. "We are very happy with second place. It always takes a few sessions to get the understanding back between pilots at the beginning of the season, but now we are in a position where we will be able to go for it in the race," said a delighted Tandberg.

Mohammed Al Marri and Abdullah Al Mehairbi in Fazza 1 were also delighted to have claimed their first Edox Pole Position podium together. Their time of 2mins 39.20secs put them within six seconds of their teammates and just over two seconds behind Welmax.

The ever-improving Duemme - Foresti &Suardi piloted by Giampaolo Montavoci and Guido Cappellini stole fourth spot from Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashed Al Tayer and Nicola Giorgi, on their final run, in what was an impressive achievement for the new pairing. Welmax Alianza’s Giorgio Manuzzi and Marit Stromoy posted a respectable time on their first competitive outing together in seventh place to finish ahead of Fabio Magnani and Marco Pennesi in Foresti &Suardi - SCAM.

With pole position in the bag, it is time to see if Fazza 3 can get their title defence off to the perfect start in this afternoon’s UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship Brazilian Grand Prix’s Race 1, here in Guanabara Bay.
